Dropout Voltage

Transformer brings down an input voltage to a voltage for which it is rated for. The amount of voltage higher that the input voltage must be than the output voltage is the dropout voltage of the regulator.
If dropout voltage of a transformer is 2V at it is rated for 5V output then it needs at least 7V as input. The difference, 2V, is ejected as heat.
